Flaxseed oil is extracted from the seeds of the flax plant, an every year flowering plant found in the Mediterranean, and it contains one of many omega-3 fatty acids called "alpha-linolenic acid," hereafter referred to as Ala. Ala, a short chain omega-3, is broken down by the body into the more beneficial Dha and Epa, or longer chains of omega-3. These long chain omega-3s are what the body needs nutritionally to balance the omega-6 fatty acids.
However, herein lies the problem. Since flaxseed oil contains only Ala, it is an inefficient source of omega-3 since the body must first break it down into Dha and Epa. And the process itself is incomplete. Some estimates claim only 5% of the Ala in flaxseed oil is converted to Dha and Epa. So, you may ask, is there a great source of omega-3?
Yes. And the name of game is fish oil. The omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil are both Dha and Epa, the two needed to guard against heart disease; and your body does not have to change anything. Does this mean you shouldn't use flaxseed oil for omega-3 purposes? We think so. There just isn't much point.
But hold that thought. Let's go over some other inherent benefits that flaxseed has.

If you have acne or high cholesterol, I do suggest giving it a try despite the lack of hard evidence.
